Close up of image 'mrwhg460' showing the former LNWR bridge carrying the Aston to Stechford line over the former MR Derby to Birmingham line showing the water crane located on the down side on 12th May 1961. Closer inspection of the water crane will show that suspended from the end of the curved pipe is a canvas tube, or bag in railway parlance. This was suspended over a drain to allow water to disperse as well as brazier or 'fire devil' which would be used in winter to stop the water crane from freezing. To prevent the crane from swinging out and fouling the line when not in use the crane had a chain suspended from the bag which was then attached to a fixing by the brazier.
