LMS Route: Birmingham New Street to Tamworth

Tamworth High Level Station: mrthl1111

Ex-MR 3F 0-6-0 No 43709 is seen at the head of a down Class K freight service for Washwood Heath Sidings

Ex-MR 3F 0-6-0 No 43709 is seen at the head of a down Class K freight service for Washwood Heath Sidings in 1961. The station is undergoing significant reconstruction as part of the electrification work to the West Coast Main Line. This was because the Midland station's platforms needed raising to accommodate the catenary on the former LNWR lines. At the time Tamworth still offered a significant facility for the transfer of mail between towns and cities on the North to South route of the LNWR and the North-East to South-West route of the MR. A member of the MR's 1873 Class No 43709 was built by Sharp Stewart in 1901 and remained in service until August 1962 when it was withdrawn from 17B Burton-on-Trent shed.
