Ex-LMS 5MT 4-6-0 No 45051 stands alongside Saltley shed's coaling plant as standby engine for New Street station and other services. It was common practice for the large sheds to allocate a standby engine in case of failure by another locomotive on one of the services which passed through their area. However the locomotive on duty might not always be of the power classification required and it was not unusual to see an 0-6-0 goods locomotive or another smaller engine pressed into service. Built as LMS No 5051 by the Vulcan Foundry in November 1935 No 45051 remained in service until November 1966 when it was withdrawn from 6D Shrewsbury shed.
