LMS Route: Water Orton to Walsall

Penns Station: mrp1146

Looking towards Walsall from Penns Lane bridge with the main station building sited on the down platform

Looking towards Walsall from Penns Lane bridge with the main station building sited on the down platform. The bridge seen at the Walsall end of the station was an occupation bridge provided by the Midland Railway when the line first opened for the benefit of the landowner to cross between his property. Access to the station was off Penns Lane; via a sloping path for pedestrian traffic for the up (left) platform; and via a driveway for horse-drawn vehicles. The Midland Railway's distinctive sloping fencing borders the station and clearly denotes the two ends of the station. At both ends of the platform are barrow crossings, timbers laid between the rails for porters using luggage trolleys and, in the absence of a footbridge, for passengers too.
