A two-car Gloucester RCW Diesel Multiple Unit passes Penns goods yard on 2nd October 1959. The DMU is forming the 1:46pm Walsall to Birmingham New Street service a turn recently taken over by this new form of traction. The class were designed to be lightweight to allow for good acceleration. None were selected for refurbishment and withdrawals started in 1969. The last passenger car was withdrawn from service in 1988. Constructed between 1956 to 1958, a total of 40 sets (80 cars) were built to carry 52 second class seats in Driving Motor Brake Second (DMBS) cars and in Driving Motor Composite with Lavatory (DTCL) cars, 12 first and 54 second class seats.
