LMS Route: Birmingham New Street to Nuneaton
Nuneaton Abbey Street Station: mrna1923
Ex-LMS 5MT 2-6-0 No 42971 runs tender first and 'light
engine' through Abbey Street towards Leicester, probably returning to Nuneaton
shed after a spot of shunting in Stockingford yard. The middle peg (signal) is
up which will direct the engine 'down the Valley' to the Trent Valley main
line. Its a snowy day and the platforms have not been cleared. Built as LMS No
13271 in January 1934, No 42972 was renumbered soon afterwards in December 1935
as LMS No 2971 later to be renumbered by British Railways as No 42971 in
January 1949, which it retained until December 1964 when it was withdrawn from
5E Nuneaton shed to be scrapped by J Cashmore's of Great Bridge.
