Ex-LMS 8F 2-8-0 No 48053 heads a long rake of steel bodied
mineral wagons on a Leicester bound service on 3rd October 1964. Abbey Street
goods yard is to the left of the photograph with two its sidings seen on the
left, one occupied by coal wagons. Abbey Junction signal box is just visible in
the distance on the extreme left whilst behind the small brick built hut are
the connecting lines to the former LNWR Trent Valley line. Between the
locomotive and the brick hut are the sidings used to marshal trains loaded with
quarry products from places such as Judkins Quarry seen in the background as
well as other quarries and collieries in the area. Built as LMS No 8053 by the
Vulcan Foundry in October 1936 No 48053 was to remain in service until March
1967 when it was withdrawn from 10F Rose Grove shed.
