LMS Route: Hampton in Arden to Whitacre

View looking towards Hampton 'Derby Junction'. The
photograph illustrates perfectly the evolution in platforms during the first 50
years of railways in Britain. Railway coaches were initially based on the road
coaches of the time, being boarded from ground level and had passenger luggage
stored on top of the roof whilst travelling. Therefore platforms were built to
a height approximately the same as the top of the height of the rail.
Later, as the railway coach developed to be more robust and
to meet the needs of the 19th century traveller, platforms were raised in
height making access more easier. Even then the height was lower than that
adopted in the 20th century. C1905
