Ex-LMS 4-6-0 5MT No 45250 is working hard at the head of a
down express passenger service on 31st July 1955. This was the main route used
by passengers services from New Street to Gloucester and the South West. Bob
Essery recalls that goods traffic was extremely rare on this line because they
would need to pass through the Midland portion of New Street station. One of
the only exceptions being the 12.55 Bescot to Kings Norton which passed through
New Street at 1.45, a time of night when there would be little traffic using
New Street. Built by Armstrong Whitworth in September 1936 No 45250 was to
remain in service until March 1967 when it was withdrawn from 6A Chester
shed.
