A late 19th century view from Severn Street of the right-hand side of Birmingham Central Goods Station. The part glazed canopy had been erected to provide cover to an area where vans and wagons could be unloaded directly onto drays and covered road vehicles for immediate onward transit. This type of activity could be carried out anywhere in the yard, as seen on the left, but because it was under cover goods sensitive to inclement weather could be moved without hinderance.
