Ex-LMS 2-6-0 'Horwich Crab' No 42826 heads towards Washwood Heath on a Class D semi-fitted express freight on 9th May 1955

Ex-LMS 2-6-0 'Horwich Crab' No 42826 heads towards Washwood Heath on a Class D semi-fitted express freight on 9th May 1955. The 'Black Five' 4-6-0 No 44752 is fitted with Caprotti valve gear and is on an up passenger service. The Horwich Crab, so called because of its high sloping cylinders and its place of design, was built at Horwich in November 1929 and was to remain in service until September 1964 when it was withdrawn from 9B Stockport shed. The Caprotti was built by Crewe works in March 1948 and it remained in service until April 1964 when it was withdrawn from 9B Stockport shed.
