A late 1950s view of Bournville station showing work in
progress on a new looking extension to the down platform's passenger shelter.
The railway follows the course of the Birmingham to Worcester canal from just
outside New Street station to the Bournville signal box. Their close
relationship is well seen in this photograph. Mature trees on the far side
screen out Cadburys' factory complex, indicating, together with the leafy canal
side vegetation in the foreground, that it was probably mid to late summer. It
can't have been very warm though, as fires have been lit in the station
buildings on the up platform. The overall scene is almost rural, in keeping
with Cadburys' garden village image. There are in fact factories behind the
camera as well as behind the trees. See image mrb1488
to see the same scene from a different angle. Both were taken from Maryvale
Road.
