The siding and inspection pit may have been used to provide additional facilities for undertaking some repairs. Its unlikely to have been used for dropping the fire of visiting locomotives as this could be undertaken at the shed with the locomotive either being towed or moving under its own steam whilst some pressure remained in its boiler.
