LNWR 2-4-0 No 1217 'Florence' passes through Rugby with an up express with the MR shed in the background. The locomotive is a member of the Improved Precedent Class, better known as 'Jumbos', and were designed by FW Webb. It was one of one hundred and sixty-six locomotives built in batches by Crewe works from 1887 to 1897 followed by two further additions in 1898 and 1901 respectively. They were officially rebuilds of ninety-six Newton Class and eighty Precedent Class locomotives, though in reality they were 'paper' or 'accountancy' rebuilds being officially recorded in the asset register as rebuilds but were entirely new builds. The LNWR never adopted the GWR practice of numbering different classes in blocks of numbers. A locomotive when built would be allocated the first number available which resulted in different classes of locomotives having adjacent numbers to other classes of locomotives. The 'rebuilt' locomotives retained the numbers and names of their predecessors, and as a result the numbering system continued to be completely haphazard.
