Ex-LMS 4-6-2 7P Coronation Class No 46239 'City of Chester'
departs Rugby with the 08:15 semi-fast express to Euston on 24th August 1963.
The driver of 46239 was Cyril (Chirp) Ashby. Peter Scot writes: 'The tender
- No 9747 - was the same tender that went to America with the Duchess of
Hamilton. The straight swap occurred in November 1945..' Built by Crewe
works in September 1939, No 46239 was built in streamlined form which it later
had removed - such locomotives were easily identified by the open running plate
in front of the cylinders and known to enthusiasts as 'Semis' - and remained in
service until October 1964 when it was withdrawn from 8A Edge Hill shed to be
scrapped by J Cashmore.
