View from Rugby's No 5 signal cabin showing the lines from the Leicester branch crossing the through lines into the Midland bays platforms. Also crossing from the left to the far right is the down goods which took freight traffic through the station and then on to the Leicester branch. The volume of coal traffic being formed at Rugby or passing through from the north or East Midland coal fields in 1885 was very substantial. In peak seasons goods or mineral trains were being dispatched every nine minutes throughout the night. In order to alleviate the disruption of returning empty trains crossing the major lines through Rugby, the LNWR routed East Midlands traffic through Northampton and Market Harborough.
