Ex-LMS Coronation Class 8P 4-6-2 No 46256 'Sir William A Stanier' pilots ex-LMS 5MT 4-6-0 No 45434 through Nuneaton station a down Type 3 Freight service on 20th August 1964. The penultimate member of the class, No 46256 was, with No 46257 City of Salford (which appeared after nationalisation in 1948), an Ivatt modified design having roller bearings and a new trailing truck fitted. The exposed cylinders were not a sign of the locomotive being previously streamlined. This feature had been adopted by Ivatt to several designs to aid accessibility for maintenance. The short cab side panels immediately made the two locomotives identifiable. Built by Crewe works in December 1947. the last month of the LMS' existence, No 46256 was to remain in service until October 1964 when it was withdrawn from 5A Crewe North shed to be scrapped by J Cashmore of Great Bridge. The Stanier Black Five No 45434 was built by Armstrong Whitworth and Company in November 1937 and was to remain in service until August 1966 when it was withdrawn from 5B Crewe South shed to be scrapped by J Cashmore of Great Bridge.
