Ex-LMS 5MT 4-6-0 Black Five No 45390 and ex-LMS 4F 0-6-0 No 44514 are stabled on the Promenade sidings during the early 1950s. To the right is an old LNWR tender being used to store and carry the sludge removed from locomotive boilers during their weekly wash outs. Tony Higgs states in his book on the shed that the Black Five had been transferred to Monument Lane shed in 1950 and was to remain at the shed until it was transferred away during week ending 10th March 1956 meaning it was Monument Lane shed's longest serving Black Five. The 4F was to be a long serving locomotive of the shed having arrived at the shed in 1942 and remaining until the shed was closed in February 1962. The Black Five, No 45390, was built by Armstrong Whitworth Limited in August 1937 and was to remain in service until August 1968 when it was withdrawn from 10A Carnforth shed after being involved in one of the railtours during the penultimate weekend of steam on British Railways. The 4F, No 44514, was built by Crewe works in June 1928 and after being transferred away from Monument Lane survived in service until September 1964 when it was withdrawn from 16E Kirkby-in-Ashfield.
