Its not known whether the open wagon on the right is there to coal locomotives due to the Coaling Tower being out of action or simply using the siding to be stored. Monument Lane was almost from the outset too small to provide a full range of facilities and services to its allocated locomotives. Tony Higgs recounts one driver who visited the shed on a regular basis observing that, 'Everything was squeezed - just room to get by here, get by there'. Tony noted too that the locomotives 'after passing under the St Vincent Street road bridge, drivers found themselves immediately in the shed yard, with the need to keep a careful lookout for other movements'.
