Looking towards Rugby of Marton station's up platform and timber framed and clad waiting room with the main station on the down platform on the left in June 1959. The tall LMS upper quadrant signal is notable because the ladder to the arm appears to be fitted with hoops within which railway staff climb. The lenses at the base of the arm were lit by an oil lamp located on the mast and this would need to be filled and the wick trimmed each day by the signalman. The up platform was built using timber piles supporting a timber platform because it was erected on top of an embankment and above a bridge. Timber was much lighter than brickwork which coupled with timber piles being driven down in to the embankment reduced the loading on the embankment and consequently lessened the possibilities of it slipping.
