LMS Route: Rugby to Wolverhampton
Kilsby Tunnel: lnwrkt3565
Workmen are putting the finishing touches to the tunnel now
laid with permanent way track. Comparison with image 'lnwrkt3562' shows that the method of laying permanent
track was not too different to that of temporary track work. The two large
shafts were sunk to expedite the digging of the tunnel in order to compensate
for the delays caused by the flooding and quicksand. Therefore they were large
enough to drive bores in both directions which in turn meant ultimately in the
future they would also allow sixty foot long rails be turned inside instead of
having to take them outside the tunnel.
