An unidentified Sulzer Type 4 'Peak' Diesel locomotive
passes Kenilworth Junction Signal Cabin on a coal train on 6th May 1969. On the
right is a two-car Diesel Multiple Unit held by signals until the single line
to Coventry has cleared. The nickname 'Peak' embraced three classes of Type 4
locomotives, what were to become under TOPS, the Class 44, 45 and 46. They were
named after British 'mountains', and consequently earned the Peak nickname. In
part inspired by the LMS' prototype diesels, No 10000 and No 10001, and by the
three Southern Railway diesels, No 10201 to No 10203, the Class 44 diesels were
some of the first big diesels commissioned for the British Rail modernisation
project and were the precursors to the Class 45 and Class 46 locomotives of
similar design.
