Drawing showing the extent and layout of the various buildings of the London & Birmingham and Grand Junction stations as they were in 1845

Drawing showing the extent and layout of the various buildings of the London & Birmingham and Grand Junction stations as they were in 1845, when the proposals for the Central station in Birmingham were put forward. Note the single-sided arrangement of the platforms in the Grand Junction station and how Franklin's Curzon Street frontage was in reality simply an imposing wall to screen what lay behind. The centre section of the wall was that between points C and D and the flanking wings were between B and C and D and E. The letters G indicate the positions of the four main door- ways. The blocks of buildings on New Canal Street, between Hardwick's main frontage and Banbury Street, which prevented the completion of his gateways, are shown. These were not demolished until after the station closed to passengers.
