View showing some of the turntables, capstans and warehouses in the top yard at Curzon Street station. Such turntables were installed on railways from the outset and were initially used to manoeuvere both locomotives and wagons in very restricted or tight areas. The type seen above would have been very similar to those installed by the L & B and the LNWR at their stations. The turntable freely rotated being dependent on external power to move the table in the required direction. Whereas initially this would have been undertaken by men or horses in larger yards the introduction of hydraulic power meant that this could be undertaken much more quickly and with just two men. The capstan seen above was hydraulically driven and would be used to turn wagons as well as to pull then along sections of sidings.
