The east end of Top Yard viewed from Curzon Street with the two-storey infirmary stable block at the far end. On the right is the three-storey block housing the horse department's provender store and fodder preparation lofts which was built about 1874. The building has been equipped to lift or lower fodder via pulleys installed under each of the the cantilevered roofs. Beyond on the same side is a single storey stable block built in 1880, at the same time as the infirmary stable. The infirmary stable serviced all LNWR horses stabled throughout Birmingham. In the foreground are two dumb capstans. These were used to pull wagons towards the infirmary block via a rope hooked on the wagon, looped around one of the dumb capstans, and then back to a powered capstan which was sited adjacent to the photographer. In the original photograph this was clearly visible.
