The Platform ticket machine was introduced by British Railways and tickets initially cost 1D (one old penny). The railway used chalked messages on blackboards to promote excursions and information on fares. The board on the left reads "FOR SPEED COMFORT & CHEAP TRAVEL BIRMINGHAM 3/0 (Three shillings [15 new pence]) ANY TIME, TRAIN OR DAY".
