Another view of the original 1838 station building with the private driveway to the platforms and parcels buildings on the left. This view shows that the building was indeed two-storey in height with the left hand portion of the structure having windows made possible because of the severe incline of the road. On the right is the wall to the rear extension. The British Railways sign reads 'Private Road to station no parking'. The post-war desire to "do away with the old" resulted in this historic building being demolished to make way for a multi-storey car park. Today even this car park no longer exists as the new car park's structure was found to have a major design defect in that too little reinforcement was used in the supporting beams. Despite remedial work to overcome the problem this 1960s structure had to be demolished.
