Close up of image 'lnwrcov546' showing the former LNWR Canley Gates signal cabin mounted on a low brick built frame room. The LNWR Type 4 Signal Cabin was the standard LNWR design of signal cabin for many years and were built in large numbers from the mid-1870s until the introduction of the Type 5 in 1904. The size of the cabin varied according to the number of levers which had to be accommodated, from 15 to 180. The height of the frame room reflected local topography, in this instance the need for the cabin to low for the signalman to see through the arch of the metal pedestrian footbridge.
