Birmingham New Street Station: lnwrbns_str1910

An aerial view of the West end of New Street station showing the track work approaching to the station and part of the turntable on 4th May 1938. The scene is dominated by the great girder bridge carrying Hill Street over the track which lay between New Street No 5 Signal Box on the left and the bridge carrying Navigation Street. Because both structures were required to span a considerable distance being at an acute angle to the track they were built using very deep girders on either side with secondary girders between. The erection of advertising hoardings on either side fulfilled two functions. The increase in height provided a barrier as well as providing revenue earning from the advertisements.
