Ex-LMS 2-6-4T 4P No 42538 stands alongside LMS 2-6-0 6P5F No 2960 at Aston shed in early British Railways days. The side tanks of the Stanier 2-6-4T carry the legend 'British Railways' which was initially used before the early British Railway crest was adopted. Built by Derby works in December 1935, No 42538 was to remain in service until June 1962 when it was withdrawn from 33C Shoeburyness shed, although this was only on paper, the locomotive was actually withdrawn from its last working shed, 6A Chester (Midland). On the right, the 2-6-0 Stanier Mogul, or 'Stanier Crab' as it was called by some, was built as LMS No 13260 in December 1933 being renumbered as No 2960 in April 1935. Renumbered by British Railways as No 42960 in December 1949, No 2960 was to remain in service until January 1966 when it was withdrawn from 9F Heaton Mersey shed to be scrapped. At the time of the photograph No 2960 was allocated to Aston shed from July 1948 to January 1951.
