Partial view of some of Witton goods yard's sidings as seen looking back from a passing down train

Partial view of some of Witton goods yard's sidings as seen looking back from a passing down train. The above photograph was taken on 2nd June 1954 and shows a number of open wagons standing on some of the five sidings. In total there were ten sidings, which could accommodate 225 wagons, plus the road into the goods shed. The absence of point levers by each turnout (points) would seem to indicate that the siding was controlled by Witton signal cabin which was sited directly opposite the goods yard. In addition to Witton goods yard there were private sidings for Crawfords and ICI factories. These sidings were located on up line behind the signal cabin.
