Close up of image lnwr_hw1516' showing the buildings on both platforms and the access to the station via paths from Hamstead Road. The four buildings standing next to each other on the down platform would have provided a booking office, general waiting room, ladies waiting room and at the far end with its tell-tale raised roof, a gentlemen's urinal. The access paths appear to be gated at Hamstead Road and would, once a year over the Christmas period, be locked to prevent any 'right of way' and thus preserving the railway's right of ownership. The platform support framing is clearly seen in this view with timber boards laid at 90° to the rails. The platform structures may have been constructed in timber to a standard LNWR design but manufactured and assembled locally. The use of timber for building local stations was common throughout the LNWR network in the late 19th century and early 20th century as part of the economies being sought by railway companies. Beyond the station's platform is a Permanent Way hut used by the PW gang for both storing equipment and for providing mess facilities.
