Pre-grouping Locomotives at Leamington
The photographs in this section are attributed to several
sources but most if not all are probably the work of one person , H.J.
Stretton-Ward. Roger Carpenter advises that on Stretton-Ward's demise in the
1950s his negative collection was sold to a Leamington lady bookseller who on
her retirement re-sold the collection to a number of enthusiasts, with Gordon
Coltas having the lion's share. The remainder were distributed to several other
enthusiasts including Roger. In addition, as many of his photographs were sold
as prints these have been subsequently copied. Therefore it is not impossible
to be supplied the same photograph from two or more collections.
The photographs shown below were taken between 1908 to 1912
and were some of his very earliest work. The quality of these photographs are
however not to the same standard as his later work reflecting not only his
inexperience but the type of equipment and technology available at the time.
This has been compounded by the fact that many of my images are from copy
photographs. I trust that most readers will agree that their inclusion is still
necessary as they provide an sight on a scene some one hundred years old.
