GWR Route: Banbury to Wolverhampton
Widney Manor Station: gwrwm1916
An unidentified GWR 0-6-0PT locomotive stands at the up
platform during celebrations marking the opening of the station on 1st July
1899. Bob Pixton muses in his book Great Western Steam in Shakespeare
Country how the GWR justified the expense 'because the station was in the
middle of nowhere'. As can be seen, the station was substantially built with
large canopies covering the full width of the platform and a covered passenger
footbridge connecting the two platforms. The footbridge was so sited adjacent
to the canopies to ensure that passengers crossing from one platform to another
would always be undercover.
