The GWR 49xx Class or Hall Class was a class of 4-6-0 mixed traffic steam locomotives designed by Charles Collett of which a total of 259 were built, Nos 4900 to 4999, Nos 5900 to 5999 and Nos 6900 to 6958. The prototype was rebuilt from GWR Saint Class No 2925 'Saint Martin' in 1924 using smaller diameter driving wheels. In addition the cylinders were realigned in relation to the driving axle and a more modern cab based on the GWR Castle was fitted. The rebuilt locomotive emerged from Swindon in 1924 and, renumbered as No 4900, embarked on three years of trials. During this period Collett introduced other modifications such as the pitch of the taper boiler being altered and outside steam pipes added.
