The slope of the platform shows the original height on the right with the newer platform height on the left. The height of platforms changed as passenger vehicles developed. Early railway carriages were based on road carriages with passengers climbing up and into the carriage as was the then practice with stagecoaches. As carriages became longer they required more substantial underframes which raised the carriage floor level culminating with bogies being fitted, the latter demanded that the carriage floor height be raised substantially.
