LMS 4-6-0 5XP Class No 5593 'Kolhapur' stands together with preserved GWR 4-6-0 No 7029 'Clun Castle' in the background on 7th May 1968. Built by the North British Locomotive Company to Lot 118 in December 1934, No 5593 received its name in May 1936 and had remained in service until October 1967 when it was withdrawn from 55A Holbeck shed. Initially built with a low degree superheat domeless boiler, she received a domed boiler in April 1937. The locomotive is noted having hauled the train carrying Winston Churchill from Liverpool on his return from talks with President Roosevelt in 1942. After nationalisation in January 1948 she was renumbered 45593 by British Railways in December of that year and was allocated to various sheds during the 1950s and 1960s, including Longsight, Carlisle Upperby, Willesden, Aston, Burton, Patricroft and Newton Heath. On 23rd March 1965 she was transferred to Leeds Holbeck and was kept there in good condition to work railtours over the Settle-Carlisle Railway. In October 1968, 7029 Clun Castle Ltd purchased No 5593 together with further locomotives and railway artifacts made available as a result of the Beeching Axe. The supporters established the Standard Gauge Stream Trust as a registered educational charity, to preserve and demonstrate the steam locomotives. Following negotiations the trust acquired a long-term lease on a large part of the Tyseley site, and established the Tyseley Collection which still owns the locomotives and artifacts via the limited company; the depot site became the 'Birmingham Railway Museum'.
