A rear view of Stratford on Avon East Signal Box, formerly situated at Acton West, equipped with a 55 lever 5-bar vertical tappet frame. Coal to heat the internal stove was provided either by locomotive crews dropping off lumps of coal or by using one of the banking locomotives to pull a wagon out of the goods yard and stand it alongside the coal bunker seen on the left of this photograph. Water was supplied by the station and delivered in galvanised containers, with two of four always being in the signal box. Until electrical lighting was installed in circa-1960 lighting was provided by 'pressure lamps' and these were suspended from the ceiling at night. During the day they were kept in lockers with the oil kept in the ground floor where the lamps were also trimmed ready to be lit.
