Coal for the locomotives was carried in the GWR's own departmental wagons with 'loco coal' painted on their sides and shunted up the ramp to the upper level to be positioned alongside the coaling station. The height of the embankment was designed to allow staff to shovel the coal direct from the floor of the 'loco coal' wagons into the small tubs that ran at 90° to the wagon track, through the coaling station, and then on to the 'draw bridge' type door which carried rails and upturned at the end to allow the tubs to be tilted upwards and emptied into the bunker or tender.
