GWR Route: Moreton-in-Marsh to Shipston-on-Stour

Moreton-in-Marsh to Stratford upon Avon Tramway: gwrmt3125

Newbold Wharf on 3rd March 1918, with Wharf Cottages on the right and the tramway track still in position

The tramway at Newbold Wharf was photographed on 3rd March 1918. Newbold Wharf was the site of Thomas Hutchings lime kilns until about 1895 and was listed in the Railway Clearing House (RCH) Handbook of Stations (1894). It seems likely that following the reconstruction of the tramway between Moreton-in-the-Marsh and Shipston-on-Stour in 1889, to make this suitable for steam locomotives, that the section of tramway between Longdon Road Station and Newbold-on-Stour was retained for occasional Goods traffic. Steam locomotives had been prohibited by the Stratford and Moreton Railway Act (22nd June 1825) from operating on the tramway north of Newbold (where the tramway ran alongside the public road).
