GWR Route: Moreton-in-Marsh to Shipston-on-Stour
Moreton-in-Marsh Station: gwrmm3137
An 1882 GWR map of Moreton-in-Marsh station showing the
original line of the tramway passing in front of Blenheim Farm. When they first
built the Oxford, Worcester & Wolverhampton Railway (OWWR) the tramway went
across on a level crossing which was vetoed by the Board of Trade so before the
OWWR was opened, the tramway had to be diverted to come into the railway
station on the north side of the line. In the short period between the opening
of the OWWR and the opening of the OWWR branch from Honeybourne to Stratford,
the tramway was one of the main routes to Stratford. Herman Melville (of Moby
Dick fame) took it when he travelled from Oxford to Stratford upon Avon in
1857. The old mileage seen in black and bold is the distance from Bishop's Road
station in London.
