GWR Route: Stratford on Avon to Honeybourne

Long Marston Station: gwrlm2428

British Railways built 2-6-2T 5101 Class No 4165 is seen leaving the refuge siding with empty stock for Stratford on Avon Race Course

British Railways built 2-6-2T 5101 Class No 4165 is seen leaving the refuge siding with empty stock for Stratford on Avon Race Course. Due to limited facilities at Stratford upon Avon, the GWR, and later the Western Region of British Railways, used the refuge and goods sidings at Long Marston to stable excursion stock being used to transport passengers to Stratford upon Avon or its racecourse. The driver has had to wait for 'The Cornishman' to pass and another train to depart north from the sidings before it can take its turn. See images 'gwrlm596' and 'gwrlm2429' respectively. Built by Swindon works in October 1948, No 4165 was to remain in service until October 1965 when it was withdrawn from 84B Oxley shed to be scrapped by J Cashmore's of Great Bridge.
