Ex-LMS 2-8-0 8F No 48414 is seen at the head of a Class 7 service near Lapworth on 27th April 1963. A new train reporting code using the lamp positions on the front of the engine was introduced by British Railways in 1962 to accommodate the introduction of diesel locomotives and new service. The above locomotive is showing its lamps in a Type or Class 7 position which was the code for express freight trains that were not fitted with the automatic brake. They were restricted to a maximum speed of 40 mph and fitted vehicles were required to be placed next to the engine and coupled up as shown in the appropriate Regional train loading instructions. Built by Swindon works in October 1943, No 48414 remained in service until October 1966 when it was withdrawn from 16B Colwick shed.
