Close up of image 'gwrhd749' showing the variety of road transport employed by the GWR for cartage at Hockley in 1940. Parked transversely in front of the 4 ton Thornycroft high sided covered lorry on the left, is a three wheeled Karrier Cob mechanical horse, while several one-horse standard trolley wagons wait harnessed, but without any load. Behind them under the canopy more horse drawn trolley wagons stand loaded, but with their shafts in the air. On the right in the foreground is another 4 wheeled high sided lorry with demountable tilt cover, which is loaded with an assortment of wooden crates, while in front is another three wheeled mechanical horse (possibly a Scammell) attached to demountable flat trailer loaded with a bundle of rods. Ahead of this vehicle another demountable trailer waits, loaded with a Great Western Railway container, for its mechanical horse tractor unit.
