The head code 1M16 provided information to the signalmen and railway staff as it denoted the type of service. The 1 indicates that its an express service and the letter M indicating that it operating between British Railway regions, commencing on the Western region but with a London Midland region destination whilst the last two digits were unique to the train. The introduction of power signal boxes in the 1960s and 1970s which were able to track individual services meant this visual reference was not required and the practice stopped in 1976.
