Ex-GWR 4-6-0 King class No 6000 'King George V, the first in a class of 30 locomotives, is seen approaching Snow Hill on an up Class A express passenger service on 9th September 1958. Built at Swindon in June 1927, No 6000 was shipped to America in August 1927 to join in the Baltimore & Ohio Centenary celebrations. In accordance with US legislation No 6000 was fitted with a bell above the bufferbeam which was retained as a memento together with cabside medallions. On its return No 6000's first shed allocation was Old Oak Common and to which it returned in March 1959 having been recorded in August 1950 to be allocated to Bath Road shed in Bristol. Prior to its withdrawal in December 1962 having ran 1,910,424 miles whilst in service, No 6000 was fitted with 'Alfloc' water treatment equipment in 1954 followed by a double chimney in December 1956. Initially preserved by the now defunct Bulmer's Railway Centre in Hereford, No 6000 was a pioneer in the return to steam on British Rail routes by preserved locomotives.
