Ex-GWR 2-8-0 28xx Class No 2818 is seen with a fitted freight passing through the station's down main line on 4th June 1958. Built by Swindon works in December 1905, No 2818 was to remain in service until October 1963 when it was withdrawn from 87A Court Sart shed in Neath to be preserved as part of the national collection. The Class was designed by GJ Churchward for heavy freight work and they were the first 2-8-0 class of locomotive built in Great Britain. The prototype, No 97 but later renumbered 2800, appeared in 1903. Construction of the production series commenced in 1905 and continued until 1919. The 2884 Class which appeared in between 1938 and 1942 was developed from the 28xx Class and is sometimes classified with it. A total of eighty four 28xx Class locomotives were built followed by a further eighty-three 2844 Class locomotives.
